WHITE AUTOCHTHONOUS VARIETIES FROM LA RIOJA
This is our commitment to authenticity, to the traditional varieties that have been grown at La Rioja. This region has always been a land of great white wines that start declining due to the huge demand for reds in the second half of the XX century. 6 varieties upon which we produce our white wines: Maturana blanca, Tempranillo blanco, Garnacha blanca, Viura, Turruntés and Rojal.
It was almost extinct from the Riojan vineyard and then rescued from 500 vines found at the town of Navarrete. It is also known as Ribadavia. It is a variety of long cycles whose most important enological characteristics are its low pH and its high acidity, with a high content in tartaric acid and a low concentration of potassium. These characteristics compensate the high alcohol content that this variety can reach at full maturity. The wines are greenish-yellow, with fruity aromas of apple, banana and citrus, along with herbaceous notes. Good and balanced path on palate. Persistent and fresh. Its wines are vertical and mineral. High capacity of ageing.
Natural mutation of a vine from a red tempranillo discovered at 1988 on an old vineyard of Murillo del Río Lezo (La Rioja). The genetic markers show that it is a genotype similar to the Tempranillo variety.
Its ripening is very early, even though it has a late budding, so it quickly accumulates a high sugar content. It has a medium-size cluster, very loose, with a medium-size berry, slightly crushed.
It produces wines with good total acidity and a great aromatic intensity, due to its high content in terpenes and other volatile compounds with fruity aromas (alcohol acetates and diethyl succinate). The musts are greenish-yellow with fruity aromas and intense notes of banana, citrus and tropical fruits. It produces complex and oily wines with a some tannicity and malic acidity. Well-balanced on palate, with volume and medium to long persistence.
ROJAL O MALVASÍA
This variety differs from other Malvasías grown in Spain. It has some phenological characteristics and a rooted history in this zone that make it an autochthonous variety from La Rioja. It can resist the water stress.
It produces wines of great elegance and harmony, easy to drink.
It is the most known variety of La Rioja. The most classic wines have been produced with this variety. It is chosen for its character and versatility. It produces wines with good acidity and high capacity of ageing. Great minerality. The ageing in barrels strengthens all its virtues.
The young white wines with Viura are fresh, floral and aromatic if the grapes are harvested early and the ageing is made in stainless steel. They can gain body and notes of honey and nuts once they have aged in barrels and been harvested when they are ripped. These wines with Viura, aged in wood, are the traditional production of the classic white wines with barrel of La Rioja.
Relatively scarce on the vineyard of La Rioja.
The wines produced with Garnacha blanca have great fruitiness, freshness and medium persistence. Of an outstanding elegance and longevity in the bottle. It produces musts with good acidity with a low content in potassium and malic acid. The aromas are of medium intensity with floral, fruity (white and tropical fruits) and herbaceous notes. Third aromas with citrus notes, watermelon and peach. Oily and with good acidity.
Very scarce at La Rioja. Not to be confused with the Galician or Argentinian Torrontés. It is a native grape, although it is related to the Albillo Mayor, existing in Castile and León. Of a short cycle, at full maturity, it has a good acidity and pH, low potassium and tartaric acid. It produces wines of great longevity. This wine is straw yellow with greenish hues and its aromas are fruity with notes of apple and with vegetable and herbaceous character. Light on palate, with good acidity and bitterness, medium persistence.
